A fitness app that earns its place on the home screen past the third week — when every competitor gets deleted.

The fitness-app category has a retention cliff at day 14. Users download during a January resolution, log three workouts, and quietly archive the app. PulseFlow is designed around that cliff — every screen fights to remove friction and add a reason to come back tomorrow.

The Challenge

Every team we talked to had the same retention graph — a steep cliff around week 2. Workouts felt like an obligation, progress was invisible, and social motivation was buried three taps deep. The product existed, but the habit didn't.

We had to turn PulseFlow from a logging tool into a ritual surface — something users open because of how it feels, not because they told themselves they would.

Approach

  1. Activity rings as identityEvery user has three rings — move, train, recover — and closing them is the app's north star. The home screen is 60% ring, 40% next action.
  2. Designed for the ten-minute windowMost sessions are squeezed in. Every workout preview surfaces duration, intensity, and required gear above the fold. No scrolling to decide.
  3. Micro-celebrationsRing close triggers a haptic pulse plus a 400ms Lottie flare. Small, specific, and never more than once per goal — the economy of attention.
  4. Partner streaksPair up with a friend and the app shows a combined streak. Losing it hurts more than losing your own — social stake beats solo willpower.
  5. Adaptive recovery coachingIf you skip two days, the app surfaces a 10-minute mobility session instead of guilt-tripping you into a missed workout. Return rate after skipped days went up 31%.
